Short response to a sorry but somewhat common misconception

Marty wrote a comment to one of my posts from a few days ago:

Terri Schiavo’s husband did the compassionate and decent thing. It was her parents, and the intrusive right wing for politicizing her death, that were cruel, dehumanizing, and beyond the belief of a god in heaven. Lying brain dead tied to tubes keeping the body breathing is cruel and unusual punishment. You should be ashamed of yourself for writing what you did.

Terri Schiavo wasn’t “kept breathing” by anything other than the same things that keep you and me breathing. No ventilator at all. Also, she wasn’t “brain dead”. Even Michael Schiavo’s attorney, doctors, or anybody else, have never claimed that she was “brain dead.”

I respect all opinions on this, but at least have a grip on the basic facts before expecting someone else to be ashamed of their opinion.

Her parents politicized her suffering? God help us when we’re criticizing parents for objecting to one of their children being dehydrated and starved to death.
