33 years ago: Cuban missile crisis announced to the public, back in the good old days when a presidential “missile crisis” involved actual missiles

On October 22, 1962, President John F. Kennedy went on television to announce that U.S. spy planes discovered Soviet missile bases in Cuba. The viewing audience let out an audible gasp, either because of the gravity of the news or the fact that Marilyn Monroe crawled out from underneath the podium after the news conference.

The above linked story offers a brief but good explanation of the Cuban Missile Crisis for anybody who has forgotten the details, or for high schoolers who think that the “Bay of Pigs” is where Porky goes boating.
