Monday’s column: World peace: It’s nothing to lose your head over

Four people billed as “Christian peace activists” have reportedly been kidnapped by a terrorist organization in Iraq.

Some say “hoax”, some think it’s a tragedy that peaceful people are in peril, and some think they have it coming for being so incredibly naive about the world. Which is it? Give a read to “World peace: It’s nothing to lose your head over“.

Bush Cassidy and the Sundance critic

There’s something about the power that is obtained by fondling that little gold statue that makes actors so much more intelligent, conscientious, and environmentally aware than the rest of us.

Tonight, “The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts” is honoring, among others, uber-frequent Bush critic Robert Redford. The president and first lady hosted a reception for all the honorees this afternoon. Last night, Condoleezza Rice hosted a State Department dinner for all the honorees.

Sometimes President Bush pisses me off. He’s so above-the-fray and classy to a fault that he’ll do things that give even his major critics free shots.

Just this past spring, Redford urged journalists to investigate Bush. Redford has attacked Bush as a “disgrace” on environmental issues again and again and again.

Investigate Bush? Hell, you do it, Robert. You’re already closer to Bush than most reporters will ever get. Check to see if a gun is taped to the back of the toilet bowl before heading back to the dinner table though. You could be getting set up.

By Bush and others hosting these things, odds are Redford will use the extra limelight, some of it brought by the president himself, to further knock Bush policies.

Liberal actors. Is there anything they don’t know? Yes. How to be gracious and magnanimous.

Pantsuit positive: Has Hillary Clinton redeemed herself in the eyes of the military?

According to Newsweek, the answer to that question is “yes”. Go ahead and laugh, I’ll wait…

Back? Okay… It would appear that Bill’s better gaff is now a hawk and great friend to our nation’s bravest. Why? She’ll be running for something. That’s the kind of sincerity that the military appreciates.

Funny how we’re so used to the military loathing a Clinton (see, it works the other way around too, Bill) that when Hillary speaks to them, if none of them turn their backs or walk out of the room, that’s billed as Hillary making headway.

Will the military continue to embrace Hillary? Fingers crossed!

When activists are attacked

Harmonic convergence has been put on temporary hold.

As you may have heard, four peace activists were allegedly abducted in Iraq a few days ago by a group calling itself “The Swords of Righteousness Brigade”. The terrorist group, which, as evidenced by their name, has seen way too many Skeletor cartoons, will kill the hostages unless all prisoners in U.S. and Iraqi detention centers are released.

Some think this may change the minds of some peaceniks, since it’s now quite obvious that terrorists don’t care about their political views– they’re simply more folks in the long line of western infidels who deserve death. In spite of this reality, this will not make peace activists think that America is less at fault in all this violence either. Quite the contrary.

An important point to remember is that, though we’re certain terrorists hate Bush, they hate the West and everything it stands for even more. If all this hatred coming from radical Islam were only due to George W. Bush’s unjust, illegal and immoral war against them, all these hostages would have to do is prove that they voted for Kerry and they’d be released, right? Keep dreaming.

If these hostages are killed, this will turn the anger of hardcore “peace activists” even more against Bush. After all, none of this would be happening if Bush hadn’t engaged in this so-called “war on terror”, right?

In reality, these terrorists would still be “out there” killing if the U.S. were there or not– they just wouldn’t be killing peace activists, because peace activists wouldn’t be there because apparently the only violence that is unjust is the kind perpetrated by the United States under the transparent guise of “self defense”.

To be a good “peace activist” requires, or at least should require, a firm belief that both sides are equally capable of ceasing violent and aggressive behavior. That’s rarely the case, but those who seek “peace at any cost” are doing nothing but promoting a world filled with despotism, murder and mayhem.

This time, the “peace at any cost” crowd is being taught a very unfortunate lesson. They’re seeing first-hand what the “any cost” is, since they’re the ones paying the price this time. Will it change their point of view? Yes. It will make them dislike Bush and his war on terror even more.
Bring on the next group of peace activists to be victimized by their own ideology.

Terrorists have threatened to kill peace activists unless prisoners are released. Peace activists have threatened to counterstrike by lighting even more candles.

Murtha: Terrorists win war on terror

Rep. John Murtha voted for the Iraq war. Now his rallying cry as he leads troops into battle is “we’re screwed! For the love of God, we’re so screwed!” If that doesn’t motivate America’s finest and bravest, I don’t know what will.

Murtha now says voting for the war was a mistake, and has recently claimed that the U.S. Army is “broken, worn down.” That’s strange, because so is much of Congress.

Is it a stretch to say that what Murtha is essentially saying is that “terrorists have won the war on terror” when he refers to the military as “broken” and “worn down”? Geez, Winston Churchill he ain’t.

Mr. Murtha, you voted for the war which sent hundreds of thousands of our troops overseas. You signed off to commit our troops to a mission that must be completed. If you’re now against it, do everybody a favor– keep it to yourself!

Murtha makes even Snuffleupagus look like a real “glass is half full” kind of guy.

“Man, that dude is a downer!”

Global warming to blame for temperature drop in Europe — Don't you just love science?

Here’s the short version: Circulation of the Gulf Stream has been slowing, according to some scientists. This is a result, they say, of global warming. The result if this global warming? More severe winters and cooler summers in Europe.

They point out that “global warming” weakens the Gulf Stream circulation because increased meltwater from Greenland and the Arctic icesheets along with greater river run-off from Russia pour into the northern Atlantic and make it less saline, which in turn makes it harder for the cooler water to sink, in effect slowing down the engine that drives the current.

If the current remains as weak as it is, temperatures in Britain are likely to drop by an average of 1C in the next decade, according to Harry Bryden at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton who led the study. “Models show that if it shuts down completely, 20 years later, the temperature is 4C to 6C degrees cooler over the UK and north-western Europe,” Dr Bryden said.

It takes a lot of gall to call this “global” warming, doesn’t it? How does the heat know to just go to the poles?

The beauty of those arguing “global warming” is that they now have a contingency plan to explain their theory no matter what happens. If it gets hotter, the “global warming” argument is an easy sell. But otherwise, they’ve still got it covered. A hundred years from now, we could all be under 100 feet of ice, and they’ve still got a “global warming” angle.

It boils down to this. A weather guy, well schooled in meteorology and other sciences at a respectable college, can’t give as accurate a forecast of what’s going to happen two days from now, but some of these “global warming” scientists have a hundred years from now pegged? Whatever.

“Five hundred years from today, the polar ice caps will be fully melted, the Gulf Stream will have little or no circulation, temperatures in Africa and South America will be 10 degrees above what they are now, hurricanes will be a daily occurrence for Florida and Louisiana, and temps in Europe will be down 12 degrees due to the Gulf Stream problem. Your weather for this weekend? No friggin’ idea.”
