A lawsuit they couldn't refuse: Italian court to decide if Jesus existed

While in Rome, there’s a man who’s actually refusing to do as the Romans do. Of all the nerve!

Luigi Cascioli is Italy’s answer to Michael Newdow, and he is seeking to prove that the Roman Catholic Church is breaking the law by teaching that Jesus Christ existed.

Cascioli, an Atheist, is suing a priest named Enrico Righi, along with the rest of the Catholic church, for conning everybody.

This according to Reuters:

Cascioli says Righi, and by extension the whole Church, broke two Italian laws. The first is “Abuso di Credulita Popolare” (Abuse of Popular Belief) meant to protect people against being swindled or conned. The second crime, he says, is “Sostituzione di Persona”, or impersonation.

“The Church constructed Christ upon the personality of John of Gamala,” Cascioli claimed, referring to the 1st century Jew who fought against the Roman army.

A court in Viterbo will hear from Righi, who has yet to be indicted, at a January 27 preliminary hearing meant to determine whether the case has enough merit to go forward.

Suing the Roman Catholic Church while in Italy is what you could refer to as an “away game”, to say the least. Cascioli would have better odds of success if he were to travel to Utah and try to outlaw the Osmonds.

It takes some cajones to try to get a court to tell a church they can’t teach about Jesus.

No matter where in the world lawsuits like this take place, courts will never rule that churches can’t teach about Jesus. Take God and Jesus out of the church and you end up with abstract opinions based upon personal whims with no divine authority– in other words, it would be just another court, and judges are smart enough to want to avoid the competition.

Like Newdow in the United States, Cascioli accuses others of utilizing the machinery of the state to promote religious beliefs, but is not shy in the least about employing the same beast — namely the court system — and on the taxpayer’s dime no less, to push his views.

It’s no small irony that Atheism is quickly becoming one of the most intrusive religions in the world.
