Teacher salaries tied to student performance — NEA writes that the idea is “stoopid”

From WFTV.com:

The Florida Board of Education unanimously approved Tuesday a plan that will grant bonuses to the state’s top teachers, an assessment that will primarily be based on how their students perform on standardized tests and other measurements.

Now if we could just get many parents to give a damn about their kids’ school performance, we might be getting somewhere. If I was a Florida teacher, I’d offer half my incentive bonus to the parents of the kids who are dragging down my class average, and, as a result, my salary.

No doubt the NEA is in “Lock n’ load” mode at this very minute over this.

Reader email: Costas unwittingly diminishing Shani's accomplishment?

This from Todd G. of Cedar Falls, Iowa, concerning this week’s column at WorldNetDaily, “Bryant Gumbel, white courtesy phone“:

Great article on Bryant Gumbel and Shani Davis…and did you notice that Bob Costas keeps calling Shani Davis the first “African-American” to win gold? I thought he was the first black in the world to win gold, not just the first black American.

Excellent point, Todd. So preoccupied have some become with political correctness that it’s finally happened… somebody practiced P.C. and diminished the accomplishment of the group of people they were trying to avoid offending. How offensive.

A Spike in the heart of Hollywood execs

Spike Lee says that Hollywood is a white man’s business, because African-Americans aren’t included as executives:

“You go to any studio, the (only) black guy you are going to see is the guy at the gate. In Hollywood, there is not one African-American who is an executive that has gatekeeper position that could greenlight a picture.”

You mean, the outwardly inclusive, liberal Hollywood do-gooder activists who champion every minority cause up until it may conflict with their business interests aren’t practicing what they preach?

I’d have to disagree with Spike. I’ve seen photos of many Hollywood studio executives. There are both middle aged and really old white people.

There are far more blacks with high positions in, for example– the Bush administration– than in the major Hollywood studios. But which one gets the benefit of the doubt when it comes to being a “friend of minorities”, “caring about civil rights” etc.? Which one does Kanye West say doesn’t like black people?

Go figure.

Monday's column: Bryant Gumbel was kinda right, in a way… sort of

It’s Monday, which means it’s time for a column at WorldNetDaily. Fortunately, I remembered this at about noon yesterday and, with the Olympics on, thought it would be a good time to comment further about the Bryant Gumbel comment.

When Bryant Gumbel said that the paucity of blacks at the Winter Games made it look like a GOP convention, some people got upset. When I thought about it a little bit, it occurred to me that Bryant was kind of, in a way, not far off base– just not in the way Gumbel may have thought.

Read today’s column, “Bryant Gumbel, white courtesy phone” to find out how.

Have a good Monday!

Monty Python Fans, Start Your TiVo's

And now, for something completely different:

On February 22nd, PBS begins a couple of weeks worth of one-hour specials on Monty Python called “Monty Python’s Personal Best“. Six surviving members of the group pick their favorite moments.

Stock up on Spam and Fosters and get ready for the most embarrassing tailgate party ever, my fellow Python fans.

"Bryant Gumbel, White Courtesy Phone": Black Man Wins Gold, GOP Convention Canceled

Just a few days ago, the host of HBO’s “Real Sports” program, Bryant Gumbel, said in closing one program that the Winter Olympics had a “paucity of blacks that makes the Winter Games look like a GOP convention“.

One member of that “paucity”, named Shani Davis, just won the gold for the U.S. in the 1,000 meter speedskating competition.

Thankfully the medal wasn’t as a sweeper in the Curling competition, or else Gumbel would have accused the rest of the team of making a brother “do the custodial work”.

It’s a good start, but what could come next? A black man hosting HBO’s “Real World” program? Maybe someday.

Over the years, there has also been a “paucity of blacks” in Gumbel’s bedroom
