Everybody under the sun analyzes the substance of what was said at political debates, but, well over a year before the 2008 election, I prefer them for the entertainment value — when there is some. There was a bit tonight.
When it comes to good lines, tonight’s Republican debate in Florida was a little better scripted than the previous debate in Dearborn, Michigan.
Here are what were, in my opinion, the top three moments that I saw while flipping between the debate and the Red Sox/Indians game:
3) Fred Thompson was asked about accusations that he’s “lazy.” Thompson went on to outline his busy resume, and the fact that he’s also fathered two kids in the past four years while in his 60′s. Fred’s only mistake was that it’s still possible to be lazy and do the latter. Next time Fred needs to clarify his non-lazy status by pointing out that the children were conceived while he was on top.
2) Rudolph Giuliani, speaking on the issue of gay marriage, said he performed over 200 civil ceremonies while Mayor of New York City, and “all of them were between a man and a woman — at least I think they were… you never know, it’s New York City.”
1) John McCain on Woodstock in 1969: “I couldn’t make it… I was tied up at the time.”
I’d like to buy a beer for whoever wrote that for McCain, and a couple for McCain just for what he went through.
