This just in from the “I’m offended by anything and everything!” department:
Greeley businessman apologized Wednesday after a joke about Illinois Sen. Barack Obama fell flat during the National Western Stock Show’s annual Citizen of the West banquet.
William R. Farr was pretending to read telegrams congratulating this year’s award recipient, University of Colorado President Hank Brown, when he pulled out a piece of paper and said, “I have a telegram from the White House.” Then he added, “They’re going to have to change the name of that building if Obama’s elected.”
People in the room gasped in shock, including Aunt Pittypat from Gone with the Wind and Dr. Phil:
What? Oh, wait, that’s Farr and his wife. Nevermind.
At any rate, I was highly offended as well. Mainly because the “joke” is horrendously un-funny.
If you’re going to risk offending somebody, do it right or don’t do it at all. Something like “Won’t it be ironic if Barack ever gets locked in the Lincoln Bedroom?” might have done the trick.
Then of course there’s the joke about what the White House will have to be changed to if John Edwards is elected president:
