Every now and then, your opponent does you a quick and unexpected favor — like when the Minnesota Vikings’ Jim Marshall picked up a fumble and ran the wrong way. Yesterday, President Obama ran the wrong way.

Obama, pitching his National Health plan at a townhall meeting yesterday, addressed concerns about his government program putting private companies out of business.

So far so good… until Obama proved his point by reminding everybody that non-government companies like UPS and FedEx are doing just fine while the US Postal Service, a quasi-government operation, is “a mess.”

I haven’t seen a sales pitch this counterproductive since James Garner had a heart attack while filming a “Pork: The new white meat” commercial:

You know, maybe he’s got a point — the private sector can compete with an entity as incompetent as the federal government. This is encourging.
