Last night, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Smokey Robinson, Natalie Cole, John Cougar, John Cougar Mellencamp, John Mellencamp (Obama’s so awesome that John decided to bring himself from all three eras of his career) and others were at the White House for “In Performance at the White House: A Celebration of Music From the Civil Rights Movement.”
It was nice to discover that I have some common ground with the president — we’re both lousy singers and we know it.
Notice during this performance of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” how Obama starts singing with the microphone fairly close to his mouth, and, suddenly sensing looming YouTube viral-video embarrassment for years to come, quickly moves the mic far away from his mouth and lets everybody else pick up the slack. He subsequently morphs into lip syncing, and then not singing at all. Good call. Been there, done that — not sober, but I’ve done it:
He’s no Hillary Clinton, but not bad.
