They fight for our country and our freedom. They suffer for our country and our freedom. Their families go through hell. And yet a good many of their votes aren’t even counted.

Election lawyer J. Christian Adams has a piece at Pajamas Media today about the Department of Justice’s failure to address the travesty of some 17,000 ballots that members of the US military mailed home before the 2008 election but that were never counted:

In the 2008 presidential election, 17,000 soldiers, sailors, and Marines mailed home completed ballots that were never counted.

Usually these ballots didn’t get home in time, mostly because they weren’t sent overseas early enough. One cause of this catastrophe is the Keystone Cops routine the Department of Justice Voting Section uses to enforce federal laws protecting the rights of military voters. Unfortunately, all signs point to a comic sequel in the upcoming November elections.

Congress tried to fix the problem last year by mandating that all ballots must be sent overseas at least 45 days before the election. But Military Voter Protection Project Director M. Eric Eversole has accused Justice Department officials of encouraging states to seek an exemption to the law. The law indeed grants states the right to ask the Pentagon to opt out of the law. Even worse, Eversole says the Department is telegraphing to states that it doesn’t want to pursue litigation to enforce the law.

Read the entire piece. The DOJ has more than enough time to fight to maintain job-killing drilling moratoriums and to sue one of our own states for doing what the Federal Government should be doing in the first place, but they don’t seem to care about fixing problems that prevent the counting of many military ballots. The military protects the DOJ, but the DOJ won’t return the favor.

Adams predicts similar issues with military ballots in this year’s election and in 2012 because there seems to be little to no interest in Washington to resolve the problem. Do you think the heel-dragging has something to do with the fact that the majority of the military does not lean left? Nah.

Substitute “military” with the name of almost any other group where 17,000 of their ballots were crapcanned and I’ll bet we’d have the DOJ’s attention. What if it were discovered that the ballots of thousands of SEIU or NAACP members were discarded without being counted? I shudder to think about the outrage eruption that would follow.

Incidentally, J. Christian Adams is the DOJ whistleblower that the left is currently smearing. The left loves a whistleblower… unless he or she is blowing the whistle on the left.
