Far be it from me to tell a Republican how to run his or her campaign, but I’d imagine this information might be useful in a campaign ad.

If you’re wondering what the Socialist Party platform is made of, just look around at everything that belongs to you that you worked hard for, then imagine making a platform out of it and giving it to Socialists/Democrats on behalf of the “common good.”

Not sure about anyone else, there is not one name on that entire list that I find Honorable! And I agree, much hay should be made over this list.

I think you are right when you said, "Far be it from me." Thank you for posting this!

too bad you opted for the sensational vs. the more pedestrian route of fact-checking or research. While the DSA claim there are 70 House Democrats that are 'members' of the DSA, the fact is these representatives are openly, unapologetically members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. Not the DSA.

I would think in the wake of the Breitbart embarrassment, you'd be more careful about taking things at face value.

Liberal, progressive, socialist, communist, statist, etc., etc. ; distinction without difference.

  5. victor on August 16th, 2010 3:38 pm

yes there is a big differance. Labels DO matter. Actions stem from labels and mindsets associated with them. Example: case in point, the label NAZI party in Germany made a big differance to 6 million people murdered in gas chambers. The label progressive is EQUALLY monterous and will descimate millions who do not agree with them as all Communist regeims do. Yes "progressive" is a code word for Communist in case you are not up on current events. No wonder Obama got elected. And we know he is a Nigerian member of the World Communist Congress in good standing.

tuh-mey-toh … tuh-mah-toh … Either way you slice it, they are still effing our country up !!!!

  7. Clu Seatoe on August 14th, 2010 10:43 pm

    Good point.

It doesn’t matter what tribe they’re from they are still enemies of the Constitutional United States. Many seeds of major damage have been sewn in the last 18 months and we may be living in a historical period when the American Constitution came the closest it’s ever come to be trampled on and tossed out.

It’s going to take generations and a lot of hard work and painful sacrifice ahead to set it back to right. One major problem is the generations to come will be raised under the damaged government and will have nothing to remember and know no other way politically and therefore may not know what needs to be done or how to do it.

It’s very hard to take back what people erroneously believe are entitlements.

You're disputing… what exactly? I didn't say they were members of the Socialist Party. They are in their caucus (who exactly do you think runs the "progressive" caucus?).

"Q: How many Democrats are members of the Democratic Socialists of America?

    A: 70"

If they're not involved with the Socialist Party, tell the Socialist Party, not me — and check YOUR facts next time please.

  9. @farmteaminfidel on August 15th, 2010 4:45 pm

Ya – Check out the date of the printed DSA page that's posted on SCRIB – it's from 2009. As many have pointed out they have change their name for image reasons to Progressive.

  10. bytewench on August 16th, 2010 4:31 pm

You're absolutely right – I should've made my point more clearly rather than just fire off that truncated observation, so here goes:

RE: research: My point was that instead of re-posting something, you might want to do a bit of research yourself. I could post a "reprint" of a newsletter claiming it's from an authoritative source that says Jupiter is no longer a planet or eating doughnuts won't make you fat, but that doesn't make it so. The briefest of research would've shown that this was just a copy of the Congressional Progressive Caucus roster. I think that in itself would've made you pause.

If you take issue with the CPC that's your right, but posting something that accuses them of MEMBERSHIP in a socialist org seems like a smear job when clearly there is not just one possibility, but several. (and while the post intro says they're members of a socialist caucus, the newsletter "quote" clearly says the list is of DSA MEMBERS)

  11. bytewench on August 16th, 2010 4:32 pm

    Here are a few possibilities:

    1) every member of Congress who is a member of the DSA (if any) is also a member of the CPC. and no others. And DSA doesn't have them on their own internal membership list so they copied the list from the CPC's webpage. Thinly possible, but a little too 'convenient' maybe?

    2) The DSA posted that list for their own gain (as a membership draw?), even though the members are not DSA members.

    3) Jim Holt was duped by someone with a bogus newsletter because it was certain to cause an outcry from the Right.

We do ourselves no favor if we unquestioningly accept whatever we hear that bolsters our viewpoints, Right or Left. When you find something worth sharing, a scintilla of research to see if it's likely to be true before blasting it out would seem to be in order, given the wide reach of your column. It's much harder to put the genie back in the bottle if this list is complete fiction.

  12. bytewench on August 16th, 2010 4:33 pm

For those posters who say tomato/tomahto "who cares if it's a list of the CPC instead of really a membership roll of the DSA since CPC members are liberals, and that's the same thing as being a member of a socialist organization": what you're saying is the facts don't matter. That's like excusing left wing bloggers who say that the Tea Party movement is racist, because SOME Tea Party members are racist. That's not an acceptable generalization. I have dear dear friends in that movement. We have legitimate disagreements about the role of government in the same way our Founding Fathers Hamilton and Jefferson did, and NONE of those friends are remotely racist. In that same vein, all liberals are not socialists, and not all socialists are communists. I completely understand how someone who doesn't take the time to realize how distructive generalizations like that are would also not be able to comprehend how someone who disagrees with them can still be a patriot and love their country.

  13. bytewench on August 16th, 2010 4:34 pm

Lastly – back to the "research" topic – one more very small data point. This list – if legitimate – was not created by the "Socialist Party of America" as Jim Holt contended. The Socialist Party USA (which you linked to) and the DSA are not only separate organizations, they split more than 30 years ago over ideological differences. Even that small factoid glitch should be a sign this might not pass the "smell test" since someone unfamiliar with those organizations (or who did not research them as I did yesterday) might be inclined to confuse the two.

A Communist Pig by any other name. Right, Congressman?

  15. @farmteaminfidel on August 15th, 2010 4:54 pm

Ya – Check out the date of the printed DSA page that's posted on SCRIB – it's from 10-01-2009. As many have pointed out they have change their name for image reasons to Progressive. Hillary was the first during the campaign to push the gentler term of Progressive. They are one in the same. In fact they appear to have picked up a few members.

  16. Dennis on August 17th, 2010 2:08 pm

so what's the difference? they all want and are driving for a Socialist nation dummy

  17. voodoo on August 15th, 2010 1:31 pm

Wench, this relationship between the DSA and Democrats in congress has been going on for a long time. This information is consistent with what I have seen in the past.

Quite some time ago – ten years or so – I personally saw the names of something like fifty-eight Democrats listed on the DSA's website as part of their caucus (in fact, if memory serves, you could get there through a link having something to do with the progressive caucus). The names were removed abruptly (maybe the Democrats started taking a little heat over it), but it looks like they've decided to bring them back out of the closet now that the POTUS is a socialist.

Always good for people to know who they're dealing with, don't you think?

  18. realwest on August 15th, 2010 1:44 pm

Say, I wonder if the Socialist Party of America has been kind enough to provide a list of Senators who are members?!?

  19. libertyczar on August 15th, 2010 1:48 pm

The 60's and 70's protesters and hippies are now in power. We must hunt them down like dogs and vote every one of them out of power !

  20. Wayne on August 15th, 2010 2:23 pm

Another time honored cliche. One rotten Communist spoils the whole barrel. Subversive A-holes. Vote them out? Put them on trial is more like it. Say it ain't so Joe…McCarthy.

  21. Hugh on August 15th, 2010 3:18 pm

The American people voted them in and has continued to do so. Therefore, one has to assume that a very large percentage of the American people are either totally ignorant or are in fact, socialist. Whatever the case, I see almost no way in which our politics can be resolved without another civil war. A capitalist republic is completely at odds with a socialist democracy ruled by an oligarchy of thugs and bureaucrats.

  22. Ann Mizwa on April 23rd, 2012 11:05 am

I love the comment "totally ignorant".. I am currently in New York, Buffalo, NY where I was born. I am totally appalled when I hear the comments re' how they will vote. They state that they feel Obama is a good President and they intend to vote for him again. Who or what are they listening to? Obviously, one source of their misleadings is the LIBERABLE media. I agree that at some point a civil war is on the horizon. I know I have had enough of the spending and deceptive practices. I am not alone so keep up the great words.

  23. surfcity on August 15th, 2010 4:04 pm

I'm embarrassed to say, I didn't even know there was a Socialist Party Caucus. Thank you for the wake-up call!

  24. John Nelson on August 16th, 2010 12:19 am

Did you notice that 90 percent of the list are from way up north or way out west, there are a few nuckle heads in georgia and florida

  25. john on August 16th, 2010 12:21 am

    blows my mind

  26. SoquelCreek on October 4th, 2010 8:38 pm

FACT CHECK: Socialists in the United States Congress?

  27. michael on January 5th, 2011 3:42 pm

I wonder how many new yorker's know, that Maurice Hinchy caucus's with the Socialist party a lower branch of the Communist party.

  28. rockribbedrushy on April 12th, 2012 4:11 pm

    Hello Doug,
    Hello Doug,

I was looking for the current 112th Congress DSA members and found nothing yet, but came across your blog.
Do you have the current list?
This will help bolster Allen West and his assertion that there are 80 or so members that are DSA members.

  29. Gene Smith on April 27th, 2012 2:25 pm

Go over the list and vote them out. Gene Smith
