President Obama urged religious leaders to back his plan to raise taxes on wealthy Americans — by saying that it is what Jesus would do.

Keeping with a presidential tradition, Obama spoke to the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington Thursday and passionately connected his policies to his religious faith.

“I actually think that is going to make economic sense,” he said of his call for the wealthy to shoulder a greater tax burden, “but for me as a Christian, it also coincides with Jesus’ teaching that ‘for unto whom much is given, much shall be required.’”

Uh huh… and what was Jesus’ view on malfeasance?

My Sunday School lessons are a little rusty, but didn’t Jesus consider publicans who took too much money and abused their power to be sinners in need of repentence? Obviously Obama doesn’t yet consider nearly $16 trillion in debt while demanding people be forced to pony up even more to be a collective abuse of the public trust on the part of the government. I think Jesus would counsel public officials on their tax & spend addiction way before having a chat with the private sector rich.

FBI agents on Wednesday raided an Ohio compound and arrested seven Amish men on hate charges in connection with haircutting attacks on other members of the usually isolated Christian religion.

At the center of the splinter group is Samuel Mullet Sr., who with his family and followers left the established Amish community in Frederickstown, Ohio, in 1995 to establish a separate group in Bergholz, Ohio. Ohio ranks right behind Pennsylvania with the second-largest number of Amish, about 61,000 in the rural areas outside Cleveland.

In addition to Mullet, the Justice Department said that his sons, Johnny, Daniel and Lester, were also arrested, as was Emanuel Schrock, Mullett’s son-in-law. Levi F. Miller and Eli M. Miller, identified as members of the Bergholz community, were also arrested.

All are charged with conspiring to carry out a series of assaults over the last few months on Amish men and women, cutting off their beards and head hair with scissors and battery-powered clippers. The acts were especially heinous to the Amish who believe there is a biblical injunction to shaving when men marry.

If convicted, the suspects face up to life in prison, the government said.

Battery-powered clippers? Amish? I smell Mennonite poseurs!

President Obama has his problems these days, but one of them isn’t still being able to find true believers at NPR:

The realities of governing as opposed to the unrealities of presidential campaigns may have made President Obama a much more human figure compared with the almost messiah-like status he had in the eyes of many supporters in 2008.

But that doesn’t mean there still isn’t the occasional moment reminiscent of a Bible story.

At a rally on the campus of North Carolina State in Raleigh, N.C. Wednesday where President Obama went to drum up support for his jobs bill, this happened.

AUDIENCE MEMBER: I love you, Barack!

THE PRESIDENT: I love you back. (Applause.) But first — but if you love me — if you love me, you got to help me pass this bill. (Applause.) If you love me, you got to help me pass this bill.

Here’s John 21:15, the New International Version, describing a scene between Jesus and his disciples:

When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”

“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”

But in the Bible, the “lambs” Jesus refers to aren’t exclusively representatives of Big Labor.

I’m flipping through the Bible right now, and so far I haven’t been able to find any instances where Jesus said, “pass this jobs bill!” It’s got to be in here somewhere though.
