Roberts nominated to be chief justice — Bush about to be hammered for not “promoting from within”

So, how do we feel about John Roberts being nominated by President Bush to fill the position left open by William Rehnquist, who died over the weekend?

Me? I’m relatively indifferent about the choice… despite the grand sounding title, the chief justice doesn’t get two votes to everybody else’s one, or anything like that. He’ll get to do all the cool stuff, like swear in Hillary when she gets elected president (just seeing if you’re paying attention) and preside over her subsequent impeachment, but other than that, he gets just one vote like everybody else.

The big news will be Bush’s pick to fill the other open seat. Roberts was a “safe” pick. Is there another “safe” pick out there? God, I hope not.
