Will U.N., France Get to the Beirut of the Problem?

The United Nations brokered ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel is being bolstered by France. Re-read the previous sentence if you like for a repeated feeling of comic futility.

How serious are the bureaucrats? The French government has sent 13 tanks to the region, each carrying a crew of three. The United Nations refers to this deployment a “peacekeeping force,” and Hezbollah calls it “39 potential hostages.”

The tanks will join about 400 French troops who are in the area. All is expected to go as planned so long as the deployment doesn’t require more than 35 hours per week of work.
