Iraq Surge Fails… for CBS News

Katie Couric went to Iraq to report on the war for the CBS Evening News. What happened? Well, we learned how to say “perky” in Farsi, but we also found out that the trip created no appreciable ratings increase. In fact, there was a ratings drop:

The “CBS Evening News” tied a record low with just under 5.5 million viewers last week, Nielsen Media Research said Tuesday. Last week and Memorial Day week are the two least-watched CBS evening newscasts since at least 1987, and probably far earlier.

It’s a bad situation when you can’t even get the curious to tune in to see if you get killed. Nice try, CBS, but if we want to watch something die we’ll tune into the new batch of fall sitcoms.
