Epic Backfire: Schools Selling Junk Food to Make Up for the Money They Lose on Michelle Obama’s Lunch Rules

All of the left’s grand schemes in failure and leave behind an aftermath unintended consequences:

Yet public schools sell sometimes-unhealthy snacks and fatty alternatives to balanced, government-regulated lunches for a simple reason: They earn hundreds of thousands of dollars, according to an exclusive Poughkeepsie Journal review of financial documents and menus and interviews with food service managers.

Ironically, schools need this income to fill growing holes in their food service budgets, the Journal found, as regulations require them to serve healthier — and expensive — fruits, vegetables and lower-fat foods with government-approved lunches.

Don’t worry, I’m sure they thought through the health care law much better!

Heads of Three Major Unions Write Reid & Pelosi Saying Obamacare Will ‘Destroy the Very Health and Wellbeing of our Members’

The Obamacare train wreck is starting to frighten the Pinky Ring Brigade in what has become a hilarious lesson in “what goes around comes around.”

Jimmy Hoffa Jr. of the Teamsters, Joseph Hansen of the United Food and Commercial Workers and D. Taylor of UNITE-HERE have sent a panicked letter to Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi. Basically the letter says, “Hey, the health care law was supposed to f*ck over everybody else, but not us! Come on, what gives?” (bold mine)

When you and the President sought our support for the Affordable Care Act (ACA), you pledged that if we liked the health plans we have now, we could keep them. Sadly, that promise is under threat. Right now, unless you and the Obama Administration enact an equitable fix, the ACA will shatter not only our hard-earned health benefits, but destroy the foundation of the 40 hour work week that is the backbone of the American middle class.

Like millions of other Americans, our members are front-line workers in the American economy. We have been strong supporters of the notion that all Americans should have access to quality, affordable health care. We have also been strong supporters of you. In campaign after campaign we have put boots on the ground, gone door-to-door to get out the vote, run phone banks and raised money to secure this vision.

Now this vision has come back to haunt us.

Since the ACA was enacted, we have been bringing our deep concerns to the Administration, seeking reasonable regulatory interpretations to the statute that would help prevent the destruction of non-profit health plans. As you both know first-hand, our persuasive arguments have been disregarded and met with a stone wall by the White House and the pertinent agencies. This is especially stinging because other stakeholders have repeatedly received successful interpretations for their respective grievances. Most disconcerting of course is last week’s huge accommodation for the employer community—extending the statutorily mandated “December 31, 2013” deadline for the employer mandate and penalties.

Time is running out: Congress wrote this law; we voted for you. We have a problem; you need to fix it. The unintended consequences of the ACA are severe. Perverse incentives are already creating nightmare scenarios:

First, the law creates an incentive for employers to keep employees’ work hours below 30 hours a week [DUH, didn’t see that one coming, guys? – DP]. Numerous employers have begun to cut workers’ hours to avoid this obligation, and many of them are doing so openly. The impact is two-fold: fewer hours means less pay while also losing our current health benefits.

Second, millions of Americans are covered by non-profit health insurance plans like the ones in which most of our members participate. These non-profit plans are governed jointly by unions and companies under the Taft-Hartley Act. Our health plans have been built over decades by working men and women. Under the ACA as interpreted by the Administration, our employees will treated differently and not be eligible for subsidies afforded other citizens. As such, many employees will be relegated to second-class status and shut out of the help the law offers to for-profit insurance plans.

And finally, even though non-profit plans like ours won’t receive the same subsidies as for-profit plans, they’ll be taxed to pay for those subsidies. Taken together, these restrictions will make non-profit plans like ours unsustainable, and will undermine the health-care market of viable alternatives to the big health insurance companies.

On behalf of the millions of working men and women we represent and the families they support, we can no longer stand silent in the face of elements of the Affordable Care Act that will destroy the very health and wellbeing of our members along with millions of other hardworking Americans.

We believe that there are common-sense corrections that can be made within the existing statute that will allow our members to continue to keep their current health plans and benefits just as you and the President pledged. Unless changes are made, however, that promise is hollow.

We continue to stand behind real health care reform, but the law as it stands will hurt millions of Americans including the members of our respective unions.

We are looking to you to make sure these changes are made.

It’s hard to feel sorry for them, isn’t it? But where’s the incentive for Reid and Pelosi to change the law? Will these unions endorse Republicans in 2014? Absolutely not.

Not the Sunshine of His Life: Stevie Wonder Boycotts Florida, Other States, Over ‘Stand Your Ground’ Law

Alternate headline: Entertainer will not perform in any state that has laws like the one that had nothing to do with the outcome of the George Zimmerman trial.

From the Hollywood Reporter:

In the wake of the George Zimmerman acquittal, the singer said he would not be performing in the Sunshine State until its Stand Your Ground law is “abolished.” He also said he would not be performing in any other state that recognizes the law, which some say contributed to Zimmerman’s acquittal in the shooting death of Florida teen Trayvon Martin on Feb. 26, 2012.

“I decided today that until the Stand Your Ground law is abolished in Florida, I will never perform there again,” Wonder said Sunday while performing in Quebec City. “As a matter of fact, wherever I find that law exists, I will not perform in that state or in that part of the world.”

The stupid thing about this is that Zimmerman’s defense didn’t invoke the stand your ground law — that’s a silly superstition (sorry) — and the existence of stand your ground is not why Zimmerman was acquitted. The defense argued, and the jury concluded, that Zimmerman was pinned on the ground and therefore had no ground to stand (no other possible retreat), which negated stand your ground as a defense option. The conclusion was pure self-defense.

In any case, if Wonder stays true to his work, there are a lot of states he’ll be overjoyed (really sorry) to boycott:

Wonder’s pledge to avoid performing in the above highlighted states has been signed, sealed, and delivered (last one, promise).

Still-Shot of the Day: Nancy Grace Goes Unhinged About Zimmerman

I can’t believe the prosecution didn’t call Nancy Grace to testify at the Zimmerman trial, because she seems to know exactly what happened that night. Or maybe not:

While speaking Saturday night with Trayvon Martin‘s family attorney, shortly before the verdict was read for George Zimmerman‘s acquittal, HLN host Nancy Grace said “fucking coons” live on-the-air while railing against what she considers to have been the defendant’s undeniable “hatred” for the teenager he shot.

Language warning with a kook-alert siren:

“Re-interpretation of what he said.” You mean, the correction of the original lie pushed by the media, Nancy?

Nancy Grace should be working for NBC (though she already works for CNN so maybe that’s close enough). Even though she knows that lie was put down long ago, you can tell she was just dying to repeat it on the air.

The Perfect Place to Advertise Obamacare: Port-o-Crappers

I’ll give the administration this much credit: They do choose the most appropriate advertising locations:

Is there a more fitting place to advertise the virtues of Obamacare than on the side of a toilet? This is a question that Washington State has answered in the affirmative. The state, writes Sarah Kliff of The Washington Post, has contracted with a supplier of porta-potties to use the space on their odoriferous conveyances to urge Evergreen State concert-goers to sign up for the law.

“The outreach,” writes Killf, “underscores how states have become willing to try almost anything to make their pitch in the face of a poorly informed and politically divided public. With 82 days left until the insurance marketplaces open for business, public awareness remains low. Most polling data suggest that few Americans are aware of how the Affordable Care Act works — or that it even exists….

Nancy Pelosi’s time-honored advice would make the perfect the toilet seat slogan: “You have to pass it to find out what’s in it.”

Unrelated note: I haven’t been losing interest in posting to my own blog, it’s just that once again I’m unable to get to my site from my house — on any computer. Right now I’m at a local library. It’s been a sporadic problem for a couple of years and nobody has been able to figure it out. For some reason my local provider just doesn’t allow me access to my site. It’ll last a two or three days, then be okay again for a few weeks, then start all over again. But anyway, there’s always Starbucks and the library. Speaking of the latter, I’m going to get out of here before somebody starts pitching me an Obamacare policy.

Broward Sheriff PSA: If You Could Avoid Rioting After the Zimmerman Verdict, We’d Certainly Appreciate It

President Obama, who if he had a son would look like Trayvon, and Al Sharpton are of course nowhere to be seen in this:

As the George Zimmerman murder trial continues in Sanford, local law enforcement is planning for possible riots once a verdict is reached.

Zimmerman is facing second-degree murder charges in the shooting death of Miami Gardens teen Trayvon Martin.

The case sparked protests last year when Zimmerman wasn’t immediately arrested, and Broward Sheriff Scott Israel wants to avoid any trouble when the trial ends.

His office has produced a PSA with the theme raise your voice, not your hands.

Good luck with that.

As far as the trial itself goes, the prosecution had another bad day in court today.

Obamacare Exchanges: Just One Example of Obama’s ‘Smarter’ Government

Yesterday, President Obama called for a “smarter,” more responsive and cost-effective federal government.

Here’s a chart I ran across showing how the Obamacare exchanges are designed. “Smarter,” more responsive and cost effective aren’t terms that come to mind:

By the way, the White House has known for months (probably much longer) that none of this will work. But then again, Obamacare is not about health care. It’s about getting goodies into the hands of the people who worked to put Obama into office for just this reason. By the time the ironically-titled Affordable Care Act fully collapses, Obama and select administration officials will be out of office getting six figures per speech, and his crony capitalist buddies will be dining on taxpayer-funded “health care” pork. Not only that, but the number of uninsured Americans will probably be roughly the same as it is right now.
